The Courtyard News - Early November 2009

~A chill is in the air as well as a little snow!  And some change is in the air too.  Bangor Wine and Cheese is changing hands.  A chance encounter in the store and friendly conversation has led to an opportunity for us and for Eric and Christine Mihan.  Christine is a Bangor native and her husband hails from Princeton N.J.  They were considering a return to Bangor and finding Bangor Wine and Cheese is the fulfillment of two dreams. Eric has an extensive wine retail background and has wanted his own shop.  Christine's background is in marketing, among other things!  They bring a wealth of knowledge, creativity, and enthusiasm which will benefit all of you as customers of the store!   Wine Tasting continues on the regular schedule of the third Thursday each month.  Please mark your calendar for Thursday November 19, 6-9pm with Brad and Daniel from Maine Distributors.  More details will follow in a Courtyard News next week

~I would like to take this opportunity to thank every one of you who has supported me and Bangor Wine and Cheese, as well as Cafe Nouveau, these many years.  I look forward to time with family and friends over the holidays.  It has been a long time since I have been able to relax at this very busy retail time of year.  I expect to see you all at Wine Tastings!!

~New store hours for the holidays are Monday-Saturday 10-8, and Sunday 12-4.  Phone, name, and address stay the same!  Please note that the store will be closed Monday November 9 through Wednesday November 11 for Eric and Christine to get organized and adjusted!  See you on Thursday November 12!!

The Courtyard News - October 2009

The Courtyard News - October 2009

~Fall has certainly landed squarely in our fair state!  Need a little wine to warm you up? Join us for our Wine Tasting Thursday October 15, 6-9pm with our hosts for the evening, Michael St Laurent and Rocky DeVinney, from Nappi Distributors. We are back on a little world tour visiting California, France, Italy, Portugal, Australia, Chile, and Argentina with a selection of beautiful wines for fall festivities and enjoyment.  Please join us for this wonderful tasting and an opportunity to see what else is new on the shelves.

~We do need to alert all of our customers about new laws enacted by the Legislature that went into effect September 12.  There is a clause in the new "Taste testing of wine" law that reads "Taste testing activities must be conducted in a manner that precludes the possibility of observation by children."  We are not really sure what they were thinking, or if they were thinking, but this means that no one under the age of 18 may enter the store during wine tasting, even with a parent. And we have to cover our windows so that a child on the sidewalk cannot see us tasting wine!!  Please contact your representatives to complain about the absurdity of this law.   http://www.maine.gov/portal/government/legislature.html

~New in BWC: A fun party bottle from Wicked is ChocoVine, Cabernet with Dutch cocoa!! Serve it chilled over ice or as a cocktail mixer. We are keeping plenty of inventory, especially as the seasonal parties approach.  A new addition to the Cellardoor line-up is Amorosa, semi-sweet dessert wine. For anyone who missed it, New Age White from Argentina is back in stock and is another perfect entertainment treat. Two favorites from past tastings, that then vanished while in distributor transition,
have returned- Las Rocas Garnacha and Dead Letter Office Shiraz. Smashed Pumpkin from Shipyard is still in inventory but winding down in production at the brewery as are Dogfish Head Punkin, Weyerbacher Pumpkin, Spaten Oktoberfest, and Hooker Octoberfest. It's time to think Halloween with Moorhouse's Black Cat and Witches Brew or Wychwood Hobgoblin!  Time to stop in, stroll the aisles, see what's new and what I have forgotten to mention!

~Did You Know? Viognier (pronounced vee-oh-NYAY)
is a wonderfully floral and dry white wine that can have an intriguing bouquet of apricots and pears.  At one time it was becoming quite rare because of limited acreage planted and difficulty growing. But Viognier has experienced a wonderful rebirth and now is much more abundantly grown in France (in the Rhone), California, and Australia.  In the Rhone it is interplanted and harvested with Syrah to produce highly valued Cote-Rotie wines. It is extremely rare for France to sanction officially the use of a white grape in such high-quality red wines. But the concept is so successful that similar blends are common in Australian reds. As a white wine, Viognier should be consumed young and enjoyed as a food pairing with spicy stir-fry and curry dishes, rich seafood, and lighter meats such as chicken or roast turkey. Our tasting includes a beautiful Viognier from the south of France, the Domaine du Grand Chemin, a vineyard owned by the same family for over 300 years.

The Courtyard News - September 2009

~The smell and evening chill of fall are in the air!! Join us for our Wine Tasting Thursday September 17, 6-9pm.  Our hosts for the evening are David and Sherri from DaVine Wines. And we have a theme night- all Southern Hemisphere wines!!  We will start with Sandpiper Brut from Australia and touch down in New Zealand, South Africa, Chile and Argentina. Please join us for this wonderful tasting and an opportunity to see what else is new on the shelves. We do need to alert all of our customers about new laws enacted by the Legislature that went into effect September 12. ~New in BWC: A fun party bottle from Wicked is ChocoVine, Cabernet with Dutch cocoa!! Serve it chilled over ice or as a cocktail mixer. We tasted it at the last tasting and now have plenty of inventory!  Effie's Corncakes and Oatcakes are in good supply and the Chamon sun-dried tomato cheese spread is back. A great opportunity on Clos du Bois Marlstone 2004, a Sonoma Bordeaux Blend, is regularly $43.00 and is on a huge sale for $25.00!! It is drinking nicely but would benefit from a little cellaring. We are very pleased to have Cellardoor Winery from Lincolnville as a new addition to our wine portfolio.  We have 6 of their wines including Sweetheart- Concord Grape, and Serendipity- Maine maple syrup infused Riesling dessert wine.  Did you know that there are 18 wineries in Maine and more on the way? http://www.mainewinetrail.com/  ~
Hot Hot Beer is Smashed Pumpkin from Shipyard (not to be confused with Pumpkinhead) and we have it here. Almost an Imperial style with 9% abv.  Other seasonal beers are Dogfish Head Punkin, Weyerbacher Pumpkin, Spaten Oktoberfest, and Hooker Octoberfest. Good beer is not limited by season!  Time to stroll the store as I always forget to mention things!!  And don't forget the Common Ground Country Fair is September 25-27.  We have advance tickets here.

~Did You Know?
For a long time in California no one was really sure just what the origins of the grape and wine labeled variously 'Petite Sirah', 'Petit Sirah', 'Petit Syrah' really were.  Those of us who have been in the wine business since the 1960s can recall fondly the wines labeled Petite Sirah that were produced by Concannon in the Livermore Valley, and the original Souvereign in Napa.  Later in the 1970s Stags Leap Winery produced a number of outstanding petite Sirahs from their old vineyard holdings. Now, thanks to UC Davis research we now know a good deal more about this mystery grape. "Syrah is the father of Petite Sirah. Petite Sirah (aka Durif) arose as a seedling around 1880, in the experimental vineyard of Dr. Durif in southern France. The seed that became Durif was the result of a cross-pollination between an old French grape called Peloursin and Syrah. Thus Petite Sirah shares half of its DNA with Syrah. We discovered this in 1998, by using DNA paternity analysis methods just like those used with humans." Carole Meredith, UC: Davis. (Courtesy of Fine Wines International)

~The Fiddlehead Restaurant News: They are open and serving wonderful food and drink!  942-3336.  Hours are Tues-Fri 4-9, Sat 5-10, and Sun 5-9.  Laura and Mel describe themselves as elegant casual dining in the heart of downtown Bangor with a menu of familiar "comfort foods" using fusion-based, eclectic culinary influences. They will be using mostly locally grown and produced ingredients for a more personal touch for customers.  Reservations are recommended.  Bangor Wine and Cheese and 2 fabulous restaurants all in the same block!  Bangor is HERE for YOU!!

The Courtyard News - August 2009

The Courtyard News - August 2009

~Summer is finally here!! Join us for our Wine Tasting Thursday August 20, 6-9pm.  Our hosts for the evening are Justin and Randy from Wicked Wines. Our special guest for the evening is Steven Berardi who works as a supplier for the portfolio of Wicked Wines. He represents the Luigi Bosca wines from Argentina as well as several wines from Greece, Spain and Italy. Please join us for this wonderful tasting and an opportunity to see what else is new on the shelves.

~New in BWC: A fun summer party bottle from Wicked is ChocoVine, Cabernet with Dutch cocoa!! Serve it chilled over ice or as a cocktail mixer. Another new line of wine is called 90+. This "winery" buys surplus wines that have received media ratings of 90+ points.  They put their own label on the bottles with the stipulation that the winery of origin is not mentioned.  This keeps prices to customers much lower, sort of the Reny's/Mardens of wine!  Present offerings include a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc,
from Australia a Barossa Chardonnay and a McLaren Vale Cabernet, and a Malbec from Argentina. Another treat from Australia is D'Arenberg The Stump Jump Shiraz getting 90 points from R Parker and only $11.00!!!  And still another Australian is Milton Park Cardonnay 2008, #1 pick on the Wall Street Journal Wine Index of Australian Chardonnays under $20.  In the beer department Sierra Nevada Torpedo has been the hit of the summer and now we have their Kellerweis (Hefeweizen). Both perfectly refreshing in the summer heat.  Dogfish Head Theobroma is in a second release and we have expanded the 22oz Rogues to 8 facings.  A summer sale continues on large format Delirium Noel and St Bernardus Christmas.  Good beer is not limited by season!  Time to stroll the store as I always forget to mention things!!

~Did You Know? Sangria
is a summer favorite, especially for parties!  Its blood-red color gives it its name which is derived from the Spanish word for blood.  It is made from red wine, fruit, fruit juices, soda water, and sometimes is fortified with spirits. Delicious white versions are made using white wines.  We recommend wines from the "value" sections and especially throwing in the remains (?) of last night's bottle!  A basic red recipe is : 1 bottle red wine (Cab, Merlot, Rioja, Zin, or Shiraz), 1 lemon & 1 orange cut into wedges, 2 tbsp sugar, 1 shot brandy, 2 cups ginger ale or club soda. Pour the wine into a pitcher and squeeze the fruit wedges into the wine (try to omit seeds). Toss in the wedges, add the sugar and brandy, then chill overnight. Add ginger ale or soda just before serving.  For a white version use a white like Riesling, Albarino, Gewurztraminer, or Pinot Grigio.  Wonderful additions to either are strawberries, peaches, raspberries, or pineapple, and a shot or two of vodka or triple sec. Enjoy!!

~The Fiddlehead Restaurant News: A big help is that the phone number is the same as Cafe Nouveau's - 942-3336. Laura and Mel have been very hard at work, cleaning, painting, doing a kitchen remodel, refinishing floors, etc. They are nearly ready!!  Planned opening is Tuesday August 25 at 4pm, preceded by a ribbon cutting ceremony at 3. Hours are planned as Tues-Fri 4-9, Sat 5-10, and Sun 5-9.  Laura and Mel describe themselves as elegant casual dining in the heart of downtown Bangor with a menu of familiar "comfort foods" using fusion-based, eclectic culinary influences. They will be using mostly locally grown and produced ingredients for a more personal touch for customers.  We are very excited for the opening and wish them tremendous success!!

~New in BWC:
An exciting new venture from Maine's Bartlett Winery brings Wild Blueberry & Sangiovese Wine as well as Wild Blueberry & Zinfandel Wine. The Mead (wine made from fermenting honey) section has expanded again. The Maine Meadery Fiddler's Reach and winemaker Rob Nicoll started with Merrymeeting, a dry mead, and have added Soft Southerly (lightly sweet), Dry Mead, and Not So Dry Mead. We have a range of Torrontes, Argentina's signature white, a selection of bargain wines ($8.00!!) from Portugal and Chile, and for the disciplined (or not) several very good value 2005 Red Bordeaux.  In the beer department Sierra Nevada Torpedo is back after a too long out-of-stock, Smuttynose Baltic Porter with a 99 score from Ratebeer is here, along with 2 very limited Dogfish Head brews- Squall IPA and Sahtea. An often requested Belgian has arrived- Leffe Blonde. Bar Harbor Brewing has changed hands again and is now a division of Atlantic Brewing. Recently released Small Batch Series of Thunder Hole Ale, Cadillac Mountain Stout, Harbor Lighthouse Ale, and True Blue are available now. They will not release Ginger as they already have Island Ginger (mm mm good!) and there are no plans to revive Peach at this time. A new Winterport Winery division, Penobscot Bay Brewery, brings us Old Factory Whistle Scottish Ale and Whig Street Blonde Ale.

~Other Stuff: Recently arrived from Safe Harbor Confections are beautiful filled creams, chocolate covered mints, and a fresh selection of small bagged chocolate moose, puffins, lobsters, and more! For the non alcoholic beverage aficionados we have brought in 3 selections from the Fentimans line of botanically brewed sodas. Mandarin and Seville Orange Jigger, Victorian Lemonade, and Tonic Water seemed the perfect summer quaffers/mixers. There are other flavors available so if you have a favorite, please let us know. A great gift giving idea is a 2 pocket Bangor Wine and Cheese logo cook's apron!! And finally, some news from Robin's Chocolate Sauce (Fort Fairfield, Me.). Robin's has been receiving national accolades and soaring sales which have enabled them to reduce prices to retailers. That is great news for you because this is gooooood stuff!! Flavors are Original, Raspberry, Blueberry, Tropical dark, Orange Spice, Ginger Pear, and Bittersweet. Robin's is certified Fair Trade, certified organic by MOFGA, and purchases support the National Wildlife Federation and Sustainable Harvest International. This is a company with a great conscience and a delicious product!

~Did You Know?
Vinho Verde is from northwestern Portugal. The name means "green wine" but refers to its youth rather than its color!  It is fruity, light, fresh, and crisp with a slight effervescence that makes it a delightful summer wine. It can be red or white but most commonly found as white, made from the grapes Alvarinho, Loureiro, and Trajadura.

~Café Nouveau News: With great mixed emotion we announce that Cafe Nouveau has been sold. It is due to reopen in August as The Fiddlehead Restaurant! We are so pleased that business partners Laura Albin and Melissa Chaiken are taking the reins in the beautiful environment, adding their own personal touches, and launching their new restaurant. They have the energy, excitement, ethic, and sense of adventure required for success.  We look forward to a long neighborly relationship and wish them and you Bon Apetite!!

~A little dose of April weather in June is not enough to dampen the spirits around here! Join us for our Wine Tasting Thursday June 18, 6-9pm.  Our hosts for the evening are Brad Power and special guest, Chris McCue, from Maine Distributors. The Maine Distributors portfolio is packed with new items and we have made a great selection to taste on Thursday.  Please join us for this wonderful tasting and an opportunity to see what else is new on the shelves.

~New in BWC  We are happy to have gotten a second allotment of Chateau Montelena 2007 Chardonnay (Bottle Shock). From the Justin Winery we have part of the last available allotment of The Orphan.  This is a great wine that developed as the result of a fire in a wine storage facility, destroying thousands of bottles.  At the winery remained barrels of the wines waiting to be bottled. Because quantities were limited, the winery made a blend from these "orphan" barrels and created a new phenomenon. The tradition has continued but supplies are limited so the winery has made the decision to sell it only at the winery. Red Car Winery is fairly new to the California wine scene. Distribution has finally come to Maine from Mariner Beverage and we have Red Car The Fight Syrah and Box Car Syrah. From Argentina is a fun summer sipper called New Age White. It is a lively blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Malvasia, semi-sweet and slightly effervescent. In the beer department is a new gluten free beer from the UK- St Peter's Sorgham Beer, and from Scotland we fave 3 new beers from Brew Dog.  Come to Bangor Wine and Cheese to taste what you are missing!!

~Did You Know?
Prosecco is a white wine grape grown mostly in the eastern part of Italy's Veneto region. It can be a still wine but it is best known as a dry sparkling wine.  They are crisp and appley with a gentle flow of tiny bubbles. It is delightful as a party sipper, great with the saltiness of sushi, perfect for a wedding toast, and especially delicious with fried seafood.  You can add a fruit nectar to make your own "Bellini", created in 1943 in Venice at Harry's Bar where they added peach nectar to Prosecco in honor of the illustrious Venetian painter Giovanni Bellini. We carry a wide assortment and the best part is that Prosecco is just as festive as Champagne at 1/4 the price!

~Café Nouveau News: We will keep you posted as there are developments.  The Cafe is currently under contract with a scheduled closing of June 30.  Maybe an August 1 opening! Keep your eye on the newsletter and watch for a Tweet on Twitter!!
